Learning your way

My core beliefs as an educator are personal and deeply connected to my values and experiences. I choose not to teach in a classroom environment, as tutoring offers a personalised and flexible approach. I am able to focus on individual learning styles and tailor the lessons to my student’s specific needs, making it a very rewarding experience for both of us.

For online lessons, I create on-screen games and quizzes, use images, sources and shared documents, and adapt activities as we go. Sometimes we talk an idea through; sometimes the learner takes the lead on screen. These tools make online tuition an engaging option when meeting in person is not possible or preferred.

Believing in the potential of each student, regardless of their background or personal challenges, is central to my teaching. My belief that all students are capable of growth and achievement drives me to create supportive and engaging lessons in an inclusive environment where every one of my learners feels respected, valued and supported.

It is crucially important to recognise diverse needs, backgrounds and perspectives and to remain adaptable throughout my teaching, ensuring every learner has the same chance for success.

I have been a mentor, listener and advocate for my learners, fostering trust and creating a safe space for growth. Strong, supportive relationships with my learners have been the foundation for a successful learning experience.

I acknowledge the value of collaboration with parents, other tutors and teachers, and other relevant professionals. Open communication and teamwork enhance the educational experience for everyone involved.

With this in mind, I strive to reflect on my teaching practices constantly through continuing professional development.

I view my role as not just imparting knowledge, but fostering curiosity, critical thinking and a love for learning that extends beyond my tutorials. An emphasis on developing learners’ abilities to think critically, analyse situations and solve problems helps prepare them for challenges both in and out of the classroom and for a lifelong pursuit of knowledge.
